Migrate TestRail to QualityMax
QualityMax can import TestRail cases into a QualityMax project and can map QualityMax executions to TestRail runs for result synchronization. Treat the first import as a copy: keep TestRail unchanged until IDs, steps, ownership, and execution results have been reconciled.
Import from TestRail
Section titled “Import from TestRail”- Create or choose the destination QualityMax project.
- Open its import settings and save the TestRail instance URL, username, and API key through the authenticated form.
- Test the connection, choose the TestRail project and optional suite, then import.
- Compare imported case count, names, steps, priorities, and external case IDs with the TestRail source.
- Generate or attach automation scripts only after the case inventory is correct.
Use a dedicated, least-privilege TestRail API account and submit its API key only through the credential form. Do not put it in URLs, documentation, screenshots, or source control.
Before: TestRail source record
Section titled “Before: TestRail source record”{ "source": "testrail", "workspace_name": "Storefront", "case_id": 417, "title": "Shopper completes checkout", "expected": "An order confirmation is shown"}After: reconciliation record
Section titled “After: reconciliation record”{ "source": "testrail", "external_case_id": 417, "qualitymax_workspace": "Storefront", "qualitymax_test_case": "Shopper completes checkout", "automation": "tests/checkout.spec.js", "parity_checked": true}Keep a machine-readable reconciliation record like this beside the migration runbook. The field names are an example checklist, not a QualityMax import-file schema.
Sync results back to TestRail
Section titled “Sync results back to TestRail”Configure the project mapping, then create a TestRail run or link an existing run. Map QualityMax test cases to their TestRail case IDs before syncing an execution. Verify a small run first: passed, failed, blocked, and untested statuses may not carry identical workflow meaning in every TestRail installation.
TestRail project and cases -> import into a QualityMax project -> generate or attach Playwright automation -> execute and retain QualityMax evidence -> sync mapped results to a TestRail runHow to leave
Section titled “How to leave”QualityMax does not currently claim a lossless native export that creates TestRail cases. Keep the original TestRail project as the source of truth during migration if returning cases to TestRail is a requirement. For a portable copy of QualityMax projects and test intent, use QTML import and export; retain Playwright scripts in version control and download required execution evidence under your retention policy.
Before decommissioning either system, verify case counts, external IDs, attachments, comments, run history, users, custom fields, and audit requirements. These do not all travel through the case importer or result sync.
